Counsellor in Training (CIT)

Opal Family Services offers Camp Wonder, an inclusive day camp for children, youth, and adults with disabilities and their siblings and peers.  With a ratio of one camp counsellor for each child who requires this level of support, we offer a safe, inclusive, and engaging program full of activities, crafts, games, and outings.  We offer inclusive programming and provide assistance to meet the unique needs of our campers.

The camp will be located at 245 Westmorland St. Fredericton (Christ Church Parish Church). Camp Wonder has no religious affiliation, and we are grateful for the use of this large, accessible space at a reduced rate.

To support our campers and to provide a great learning opportunity for youth, we offer a Counsellor in Training (CIT) program for youth from ages 13-19.  Counsellors in Training must be independent, act as role models for campers, and be willing to try new things and engage in camp activities with the group.  CITs will be supported by Camp Wonder Staff and will not be responsible for working with campers alone. However, they must be able to work with minimal supervision at times.  We provide transportation for all camp outings, but CITs are responsible for their own transportation to and from camp. CIT training will be held prior to camp beginning and we ask that those interested to commit to participating in at least 2 weeks of Camp Wonder.  CITs are not paid but this experience has often led to paid opportunities in the future and provides highly rewarding work experience.

Counsellors in Training should bring daily:

  • Comfortable clothing and a change of clothes

  • Swim gear

  • Water bottle

  • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses

  • Comfortable shoes

  • Lunch and snacks

  • Weather appropriate items as we go outside every day

 Counsellor in Training Benefits:

  • Fun and rewarding work experience

  • Team work and friendships

  • Recreation, outings, and outdoor activities

  • Skill building (communication, leadership, problem-solving, organization, teamwork)

The cost to register as a CIT is $100 which includes a full day of training, team building and lunch that day, and two (or more) full weeks of participation in camp and all associated recreational opportunities. Payment can be made by e-transfer or by check to Opal Family Services. Families can apply for financial support for camp through Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program.
